DHL already understood the problem. Every team started the day with a standup, printing facts and figures so people could see what was going on and where they needed to improve.

Those packs commonly ran to 30 or 40 sheets per person. The cost was real, in paper, in printers, and in the time spent building a stack that was out of date the moment it left the tray.

Paper is also a poor way to communicate operational data. You cannot switch data source, change the layout, or put a live view on a wall that the whole team can see. The important numbers were buried in a pile.

Any replacement had to respect the environment it would live in. This is a logistics floor, not a design studio. The product needed to use hardware they already had, stay secure, and be controllable by the people running the standup, not by a specialist in a back office.

We built a product that uses existing screens to show the same information clearly, controlled from a phone or tablet. Teams can choose data sources or images and change how the data is laid out without reprinting anything.

The standup becomes a live display rather than a paper ritual. The person running it can reconfigure the view from an iPad or phone, so the conversation stays on the numbers instead of on who has the next sheet.

The Android app was built with Cordova, HTML5 and CSS3, which let us move quickly on familiar web technologies while still delivering a proper device app. Authentication sits at bank-level security, which is non-negotiable on a network like DHL’s.

Economically and environmentally the print run disappears. Operationally the data becomes something you can actually look at together. That is the whole point of a standup, and the software finally matches it.
